Our Chair/Nuestra Silla: The Armory Show 2026//Marc Straus Gallery
The monumental 7.5 foot-tall stainless-steel sculptures recreate, on an exaggerated scale, the ubiquitous plastic chairs found throughout Dominican neighborhoods in New York. Commonly seen on front porches, sidewalks, and neighborhood domino games, these everyday chairs carry a sense of familiarity, community, and shared cultural experience. By transforming an ordinary domestic object into towering sculptural form, Hierro draws attention to its cultural significance, elevating an object associated with gathering, leisure, and social connection into a monumental representation of Dominican life and identity in New York.
The work invites us to look more closely at the everyday, elevating the personal and culturally specific into monnumental forms that resonate across generations and place.
